Why I’m no different to anyone else when it comes to needing a coach

Sometimes we all need that person in our lives to get us back on track, to help us find the answers we have within by asking the questions that need asking. Today was that day for me.
It can be so easy for our life to get out of balance without even realising it. Things sneak up on us; work gets busy, it feels like there’s not enough hours in the day, family demands in many forms takes precedence over any “me time”, the list goes on. We can’t see the wood for the trees, perhaps we’re also sleep deprived or not making the greatest food choices. It’s easy to underestimate the load we’re carrying and eventually it tends to show up – our Super Hero cape and tights get a bit tatty and generally something gives! We all react to stress and overload in different ways, it’s about understanding our own triggers and warning signs which are many and varied.

Perhaps our thinking begins to lack clarity, brain fog sets in and having a “duvet day” suddenly seems very appealing! And sometimes that’s exactly what we need to do. To pause, take a break, take stock and re prioritise.

From digestive issues, not sleeping, being grumpy, having brain fog, lost your spark, feeling anxious with an increased heart rate to so much more sinister and serious symptoms – the list is huge as to how stress shows up in us.

One strategy to get back on course is to ask yourself what do you need more of in your life? Could it be more joy, fun, creativity, time in nature, doing something that you love, time out, exercise, self care? Funny how by adding in some of those good things in life, we crowd out the “not so good” and greater balance comes about as a result. Or in reverse, asking yourself “What’s not serving me well” then taking action to rectify.

Reach out for help, call on your support crew, surround yourself with those who lift you up and inspire you. That was what I needed to do today. I’m very fortunate to have a great friend who’s an excellent coach, who’s not afraid to ask me the hard questions to set me back on course. People often wonder why they’d need a coach but remember, the higher up the sports ladder people or teams go, the more coaches they have and we don’t question it. How many different coaches do the All Blacks have for different aspects of their game?

Becoming a Health Coach was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life, it has honestly changed my life. Not just in my working world but my personal relationships, the power of asking questions is amazing.
